There’s no better way to break in a new boat than a 170km round trip across the Hauraki Gulf.
We joined Alistair and his son Spencer on the maiden voyage of their stunning new Kingfisher 670 Powercat, “Voltron” — destination: the Coromandel, in search of hard-hitting kingfish and trophy snapper.

The pressure was on from the start. Spencer had never landed a “big one” before, and with the twin hulls of the 670 pushing across the Gulf for the first time, there was plenty riding on the day.
The Kingfisher 670 Powercat is built for exactly this kind of mission. Its wide 2.49m beam and twin-engine setup deliver the offshore capability and confidence you need for longer passages, while the spacious cockpit layout gives the crew room to work when the fish are on. It’s the kind of boat that makes you want to push further and stay longer.
Did Spencer manage to tame a Coromandel kingi on his maiden voyage? You’ll have to watch to find out.
The 670 Powercat is available in hardtop and open configurations. Explore the full specs here.
